Abstract

The bridge on Route 231 in North Yarmouth will be reopened next week, and is one of the first of 16 bridges in the Maine Timber Bridge Inititiative, a joint effort of the University of Maine at Orono and the Maine Department of Transportation. The project is testing the viability of replacing the steel and concrete construction of most modern bridges with timber, which has a life expectancy of 70 years. The 39-foot bridge uses 260 trusses made of 2-by-6 southern pine lumber, and is expected to easily handle any traffic. Details.
