Abstract

Article about the Maine sardine industry, which counts on automation and exports to survive. Maine currently has six canneries, three of which are owned by Stinson Seafood Co. The canneries turn out 925,298 cases a year, down from a peak of 3.8 million cases in 1950, when there were 46 canneries in the state. The industry brings about $40 million into the state and employs 1,000 people. Details, including production figures from 1875 to present.
