Abstract

Tired truckers have killed five young Mainers in the state over the last eight months, and although state police can issue citations for driving longer than the 10 hours that federal law allows they are powerless to get the truckers off the road. Falsifying a logbook to conceal the actual number of hours on the road is a common occurence, and in Maine it's no crime to drive while fatigued. The state has a reputation for being easy on truckers, but some believe it should become more like Ohio, which is very strict concerning all highway safety rules. Details, related article on sleepiness and driving.
