Abstract

State legislators and municipal officials in Aroostook County are criticizing Central Maine Power Co.'s (CMP) proposed $78 million buyout of Fairfield Energy Venture, saying the deal would misuse a $100-million Finance Authority of Maine low-interest loan fund. CMP says the deal would save the utility's customers $36 million over the eight years remaining on the 15-year contract, while critics say the buyout will result in a shutdown of the plant and the elimination of nearly 40 full-time jobs.
