Abstract

During the recession in the early 1990s, many New England banks were suffering from bad real estate loans, and small businesses were having a hard time getting banks to lend to them. Small business lending has replaced real estate development as the hot area for Maine banks, and the Maine Bureau of Banking in January reported the first increase in commercial loan volume at Maine banks since 1990. The Foreside Co. of Camden, recently named to Inc. magazine's list of fastest growing companies, is the kind of business that Maine banks are now interested in serving. Details.
