Abstract

The Island Institute in Rockland was founded ten years ago by Philip Conkling, 45, an environmental scientist. The non-profit institute, with 3,000 members and a $1 million annual budget, works to balance environmental and human concerns on Maine's 3,500 islands. It will take possession of Heron Neck Lighthouse on Green Island off Vinalhaven from the Coast Guard this summer, and recently proposed acquiring 30 other Maine lighthouses.
