Abstract

Telephone calls to the Family Crisis Shelter in Portland have increased from 89 for the three weeks before O.J. Simpson's arrest to 169 in the three weeks since the arrest was made. Lois Reckitt, director of the shelter, yesterday said that more women are thinking about leaving abusive partners because the Simpson case has focused national attention on the problem of domestic abuse. Reckitt made the comments at the second meeting of the Portland Family Violence Collaborative, a group seeking to expand the services available to victims of domestic violence.
