Abstract

Maine is home to 12 woolen mills, and all are feeling the pinch caused by the importation of wool coats from Ukraine. Ukraine last year exported one million coats to the U.S., the fabric equivalent of one New England mill's production, and Ukraine exports are expected to increase this year. The woolen manufacturing industry in Maine employs 2,500 people, and mill executives are calling for bilateral trade negotiations with Ukraine and import quotas for 1995. Details.
