Abstract

The town of Cape Elizabeth has completed negotiations to purchase the estate of Thomas Jordan, a Revolutionary War soldier who willed his farm to the town's poor in 1825. The purchase amount for the farm and back rent stemming from the town's use of the property will be put into a trust fund in Jordan's name, and income from the $750,000 investment will benefit town residents living below poverty guidelines. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is appraising 100 acres of the estate, which could be sold to the federal government to become part of the Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge. Details.
