Abstract

Maine Attorney General Michael Carpenter and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Joseph Brennan yesterday proposed that the state attorney general be elected by the people instead of the Legislature. Maine is the only state in the union that elects its attorney general by a secret vote of the state Legislature, whereas 43 states elect their attorney general by popular election.
