Abstract

School unions have been in Maine since the early 1900s, and today 126 municipalities in the state, or one in three, belongs to a union. Some educators describe unions as complex bureaucracies that have outlived their usefulness, and the Maine State Board of Education next month will examine the issue of school unions and review district organization and consolidation. There were 130 school unions during the early part of the century, while 32 exist today. Details.
