Abstract

Gov. McKernan has agreed to allow the Maine National Guard to assist in moving 163,000 cubic yards of sand from the Wells Harbor jetties to Drakes Island Beach and Wells Beach. An inspection by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers last year showed that erosion in the area was worsening. Although some of the beach front owners are skeptical about the long-term success of the beach replenishment project, most have given permission for the work to progress. Details.
