Abstract

The Portland International Hostel, located at the University of Southern Maine's Portland Hall on Congress Street, is currently in its second summer of providing travelers with inexpensive lodging. Bar Harbor has had a hostel for the past two decades, and another opened this year in South Hiram, overlooking the foothills of the White Mountains. Hosteling began in Germany in 1910, and the first American hostel opened in Northfield, Mass., in 1934. Details.
