Abstract

On July 11, 1944, a U.S. Army A26-B Invader bomber piloted by South Portland native Philip I. Russell caught its wing on the ground as it was attempting to land and crashed into the Redbank trailer park in South Portland, killing the crew of two and 17 people on the ground. The tragedy still stands as Maine's deadliest air crash, and fifty years later the cause remains a mystery. Details, related article.
