Abstract

The Sierra Club has notified the state and federal governments it plans to file a lawsuit over the destruction of wetlands by the Maine Department of Transportation and its contractors at the proposed Sears Island cargo terminal. MDOT has been planning the project and studying the island since 1982, and although intitial environmental studies indicated there were no wetlands on the island a 1989 assessment located at least 200 acres of wetlands. The Sierra Club hopes to force the federal Environmental Protection Agency to act on the bulldozing of 10 to 15 acres of wetlands on the island, which allegedly occurred between February and November 1985.
