Abstract

The Legislature's Audit and Program Review Committee has initiated a six-month investigation of the Maine Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation. One of its early findings is that the state might have to come up with an additional $25 million a year to fund mental health services for hospitalized patients. The shortfall would come with the end of the Disproportionate Share program under Medicaid, which allows hospitals with a large number of Medicaid patients to be reimbursed at a rate higher than other hospitals.
