Abstract

Bath Iron Works tomorrow will launch the Carney, an Aegis destroyer weighing 12.7 million pounds. BIW will follow a 100-year-old tradition when it sends the vessel down 460 feet of concrete on a half-inch of grease into the Kennebec River. A bottle of domestic champagne wrapped in fine wire mesh will be smashed against a special steel edge attached to the ship's bow. Details.
