Abstract

A U.S. Justice Department report released this week says major crimes by juvenile offenders have increased 68 percent nationally since 1988. Although Maine is not experiencing the same national increase the state is following the trend. Assaults, rapes, robberies and weapons violations by juveniles in Maine increased 42 percent from 1989 to 1993, and while overall crime in the state decreased in 1993, the percentage of crimes committed by juveniles increased.
