Abstract

In 1986, Dana Baratta, 33, a Brunswick native, was living and working in Los Angeles when she received news that Maine celebrity Andre the seal died. Baratta negotiated the film rights to "A Seal Called Andre," the book about Andre by Lew Dietz and Harry Goodridge, Andre's friend, and wrote a screenplay based on the book. She had to embellish the story with a fictional murder plot and an obnoxious lobsterman to interest a Hollywood studio in doing the movie. Details.
