Abstract

The Natural Resources Defense Council, based in Washington, D.C., this week issued its annual beach-pollution report, which included Maine among the 25 states with inadequate water-monitoring programs. The council noted that only four of Maine's many beaches are monitored for water pollution, and the state is one of 17 in the nation with limited water-monitoring programs. The council called for support of legislation pending in Congress that would establish a national beach-monitoring program.
