Abstract

Joseph Kelley, director of the Maine Geology Division of the Maine Geological Survey, has refused to endorse a plan to move 159,000 cubic yards of sand to Casino Square and Drakes Island Beach in Wells to help stem tidal erosion. The town will be unable to get the necessary permits without Kelley's endorsement of the project, effectively killing the plan. Wells selectmen say they will attempt to persuade the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to remove two harbor jetties, which Army officials and Kelley blame for the coastal erosion.
