Abstract

The Maine Democratic state convention in 1992 changed the party rules to institute a combined caucus-primary system, and last Sunday the state committee voted against repealing the new system. Maine's first primary is scheduled to take place the same day as New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation presidential primary, which puts Maine at odds with both New Hampshire and the national Democratic Party. Supporters of the new system say voters are more likely to cast a quick ballot than to attend a long caucus. Details, related article.
