Abstract
The city of Portland has applied for a $1.4 million lead-abatement grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to test older houses for lead and to remove the hazard when found. Portland last year requested, but did not receive, a $1.3 million grant for the same purpose, but the grant pool has been increased from $90 million to $142 million, and funds will be awarded to up to 30 cities nationwide. The grant would be used to screen children 7 and younger for lead, test houses and apartments for the metal and remove it when necessary. Details.
