Abstract

Colby College has received $5.7 million from the estate of the late Edith and Ellerton Jette, of Boston and Sebec, the largest cash gift in the history of the school. Ellerton Jette, the chairman of C. F. Hathaway Co. of Waterville for nearly 40 years, died in 1986, while Mrs. Jette died in 1992. Neither of the Jettes attended Colby, but between them they gave the school $10 million in cash and in paintings. Their 1954 gift of the American Heritage Collection of American primitive art led to the opening of the Colby College Museum of Art.
