Abstract

Local 6 of the International Association of Machinists, representing 5,700 of Bath Iron Works' 8,900 employees, and the management of BIW are negotiating a contract designed to radically change the relationship of management and employees. The contract would replace the traditional management structure with a system called teaming, in which employees assume some of management's traditional responsibilities. Although some at BIW are calling teaming a union sellout, the change was recommended by union leaders at the shipyard more than a year ago. Details.
