Abstract
The SS Jeremiah O'Brien, which steamed into Portland Harbor yesterday for an eight-day visit, is the sole survivor of the 5,500-vessel Allied armada that stormed the Normandy beaches on D-Day in 1944; the last sailing Liberty ship of the 2,170 built for the war; and the last of the 236 Liberty ships built in Maine to return to the port where it was built. The expected casualty rate of the Liberty ships was so great that the Navy considered one safe voyage per ship a full quota. Details, history of the O'Brien.
