Abstract

In part because of a realization that most government services could be privatized, municipal officers are becoming more sensitive to the need to achieve "customer satisfaction." Freeport municipal employees recently attended a seminar on customer satisfaction conducted by L. L. Bean employees, and Cape Elizabeth has made customer service one of its goals for 1994, resulting in public opinion surveys and the reorganization of the way some services are delivered. Portland last month released a "Reinventing Government" report that recommends better ways of delivering city services, and other municipalities are considering keeping town and city halls open on Saturdays and extending hours.
