Abstract

All nine members of the Portland City Council have signed a statement opposing a statewide referendum that would overturn the city's gay-rights ordinance and prevent other municipalities from adopting similar ones. Maine Won't Discriminate, a coalition formed to oppose the referendum drive by Concerned Maine Families, sponsored the press conference at which the statement was offered. Concerned Maine Families last week announced that it had collected 67,000 signatures, which if certifed will be enough to put the proposal on the November 1995 ballot.
