Abstract

Ideal breeding conditions for mosquitos have made the summer of 1994 one of the worst in memory, and Scarborough, because of its extensive wetlands, is getting it worse than most municipalities. Residents are seeking relief from the pests, and many have called the state Board of Pesticide Control to find out what can be done. The Wells Chamber of Commerce since 1977 has imported and sold dragonfly nymphs, which feed on mosquito larvae, while others suggest installing bat houses. A single bat can eat as many as 1,000 mosquito-sized insects each night.
