Abstract

"City Life" piece on Michael Rodriguez, 35, who runs the Portland Regional Opportunity Program's Peer Leaders program. The Peer Leaders program began in 1987 with the aim of teaching children about the dangers of teen-age pregnancy, drugs and crime, and has grown into an operation with a $300,000 budget, four teams of youth workers and more than 350 participants ages 9 to 20. Rodriguez, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., uses humor and honesty about his own life to reach the kids with who he works. Details.
