Abstract

State representative Patrick Paradis, D-Augusta, is proposing a constitutional amendment that would require candidates for governor to be residents of Maine for the five years preceding the election. A recent challenge to the candidacy of Republican gubernatorial candidate Susan M. Collins resulted in a court ruling concluding that the state Constitution's language did not limit residency to the five years preceding the election, and Paradis said the ruling indidcates the constitutional provision needs to be clarified.
