Abstract

Duncan M. FitzGerald, a Boston University geologist, with scientists from the University of Maine and the Maine Geological Survey, are studying how the tides and rivers interact to affect the movement of sand, which causes the erosion as well as the buildup of beaches. Funded by a grant from the Massachusetts In titute of Technology, the group is wrapping up the second phase of a seven year study of Maine's largest beach systems: Saco Bay, the Kennebec River mouth, and the Wells Embayment. This article focuses on Popham beach at the mouth of the Kennebec and also on some of the Saco River findings.
