Abstract

Sister Maria Nau, 63, a Greek Orthodox nun, described as a peculiar person with emotional problems, has been arrested and charged with criminal threatening with a firearm after having had two armed-standoffs with police at her remote cabin on Silver Lake over the weekend. A state trooper said Nau is a frightened women with poor vision and hearing, who has lived in convents and monastic seclusion for forty years. Police speculate she might have been harassed by neighbors who didn't understand her. The events leading to her arrest began when she threatened a warden who arrived at her camp on Friday to investigate a fire. Nau is being held in Penobscot County Jail because she will not leave with anyone but a representative of the church.
