Abstract

The former Riverton Trolley Park is being restored as part of the project to widen Route 302 and replace the old bridge over the Presumpscot River, but some people are concerned about the city's decision to reverse the locations of the trolley and carriage gates. Local history buff Kenneth Thompson noticed the change, which city officials said was being done for aesthetic reasons. Designers of the project wanted the ornate carriage gates in the most visible spot when the 19-acre park is cleaned up and re-opened for pedestrians. Details.
