Abstract

The Chapman Corp. of Portland was founded in 1904 by William Chapman, an electrical engineer who developed the first patented device for eliminating static electricity. Joy Bishop-Blood, company president and owner, was part of a group that purchased the firm from a New York holding company in 1978. The company since then has expanded its work force from 18 to 40, and sales this year are up around 25 percent. Chapman has recently started making a product that generates static, designed for the fast-growing graphic arts and commercial printing industry. Details.
