Abstract

The Maine Public Utilities Commission on Wednesday will begin hearings on a controversial new way of setting electric rates that if instituted could limit rate hikes for Central Maine Power Co. (CMP) customers through 1999. The alternative method would cap the amount that CMP could raise its rates each year, and in exchange would give the utility incentives to become more efficient and the potential to earn more money. Supporters of the proposal say it will benefit customers by lowering electric bills, but opponents say bills are going to decline anyway, and customers will benefit more if the current method of setting rates is maintained.
