Abstract

"Making the Grade," a book written by Gov. John McKernan scheduled to reach store shelves on Tuesday, offers a rosy assessment of Maine's Youth Apprenticeship Program. The book gives an accurate reflection of the governor's hopes when he launched the program in May 1992, but the current reality is somewhat different. Program architects had originally hoped to have 200 youths involved in the program by now, but to date only 75 students have been placed in 45 workplaces. Details.
