Abstract

Third in a four-part series profiling the state's gubernatorial candidates. Democratic candidate and former Governor Joseph E. Brennan, 59, of Portland, opposes any increase in the sales or income taxes; favors the creation of loan funds to add value to natural resources and provide job training; would expand shipping and upgrade rail service; would cut the 186-member state Legislature in half and eliminate the House of Representatives; and believes state government should focus on finding jemployment for welfare recipients.
