Abstract
More than 15 million tons of salmon, shrimp and other seafood were raised on fish farms worldwide in 1991, and last year fish farmers in Maine raised nearly 15 million pounds of salmon valued at $42.5 million. Scientists and others are now looking at aquaculture as a means to enhance the natural stocks of fish. Island Aquaculture Co. of Swan's Island and the Island Institute of Rockland have applied for a federal grant to fund a project to build a cod hatchery, and propose to release the cod larvae into the ocean to increase the natural fish stock.
