Abstract

Referendums on school spending have become increasingly common in Maine in recent years, as groups forcing the changes see secret-ballot votes as an effective way to limit property tax increases. Taxpayer associations in Gray and Topsham have petitioned to place their own budgets proposals on the ballot in the June 8 elections, a move opposed by the school boards in the districts to which those towns belong.
