Abstract

Theodore Curtis of Orono, chairman of a panel planning the commissioning of the USS Maine, said he is disappointed that Portland will not be the host city for the event, but is thankful that Kittery may get the opportunity. Navy officials this week decided they couldn't get the government clearance necessary to moor the nuclear-powered submarine in Portland Harbor. Kittery, site of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, already has the needed clearance and is expected to be Gov. McKernan's choice for the site of next summer's commissioning.
