Abstract

Lawyers for the town of Cumberland, its insurance carrier, and police chief Leon Planche are attempting to negotiate a settlement to the controversy surrounding the embattled police chief, who was recently reinstated in his job after having been removed for alleged drinking while on the job. Some Cumberland officials and residents believe that Planche's effectiveness as chief has been compromised and that he should be replaced. Planche believes that any settlement should provide him with a secure financial future because his reputation and ability to find another position have been compromised by the controversy.
