Abstract

The Maine Educational Assessment math scores for last year's 11th-graders at Freeport High School dropped significantly for the second year in a year, with scores 20 points below the state average. An analysis of the scores show that many of the students had avoided taking advanced math courses. State figures show a direct correlation between the level of math taken and a student's score. Reading and writing scores for students in the Freeport system in both the 8th and the 11th grades increased, which seems to contradict any theory about the class being weaker than its predecessors.
