Abstract

Virginia Spiller, librarian for the Old York Historical Society, said there is no doubt that the 6-foot-8-inch granite Civil War memorial in the center of York depicts a Confederate soldier. Rick Souza is trying to help solve the mystery of how the Confederate soldier came to York, and thinks it might have been swapped with one of a Yankee soldier. He thinks there is a southern town with a Yankee soldier in their square, and has written to a number of towns with the name York or derivations of that name.
