Abstract

The groundfish committee of the New England Fishery Management Council yesterday voted to recommend to the full council that fish populations on Georges Bank be rebuilt through a system of area closures and time restrictions. They will also recommend that quotas be passed for the rest of New England, including the Gulf of Maine, to protect the fish stocks. Allen Peterson, regional director of the National Marine Fisheries Service, told the committee it needs to have a detailed plan in place by 1995, or federal officials may step in and do the job.
