Abstract

The Knox Woolen Mill in Camden, now the office of MBNA America Bank, is a symbol of the change taking place in Maine's economy, where traditional manufacturing jobs are being replaced by technology-dependent service positions. Telephone customer service and telemarketing jobs don't pay as well as many of the manufacturing positions that the state has lost, but the work is cleaner and less dangerous, and offers about as much opportunity for advancement as many manufacturing jobs. The thousands of jobs being created by MBNA and other information-based companies represent the future for many Maine workers. Details.
