Abstract

Richard Pattenaude, president of the University of Southern Maine, yesterday refused the request of members of an Indian group, Indigenous Resistance Against Tribal Extinction (IRATE), that the university drop two non-credit courses the group finds offensive. Pattenaude said the university must preserve its tradition of academic freedom.
