Abstract

Republican and Democratic Rep. Fred L. Richardson of Portland moved on two fronts to drive embattled House Speaker John L. Martin from office because of his handling of the ballot-tampering scandal. But there was no sign of significant Democratic support for either initiative, with most Democrats being generally supportive of the speaker. Related stories.
