Abstract

Hail, strong winds, rain squalls and cold temperatures have grounded many of the 30,000 hives of honeybees brought in for blueberry pollination in Washington County, leading to speculation of a smaller crop. A plant disease known as mummy berry, which infects leaves and stems of blueberry plants with a fungus that renders part or all of the plant fruitless, is also making a repeat of last year's bumper crop of 84.2 million pounds produced unlikely.
