Abstract

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection has indicated that there are problems with its efforts to comply with wetlands-compensation regulations in the cleanup of the Saco Tannery Pits toxic-waste site in Saco. Under the regulations, wetlands ruined during the cleanup must be replaced with wetlands elsewhere. The state's negotiations to purchase the 257-acre Saco Heath have run into problems, forcing the agency to look for replacement acreage elsewhere.
